The Street
Can Studios built "The Street" as part of the first round of materials commissioned by Becta for the National Learning Network. This ground breaking a 20-hour course delivers key communication skills through contextual learning. The course targets secondary school and college students between the ages of 16-25 and brings the communication curriculum to life, taking learners into a cartoon street populated with animated characters. Learning scenarios take place in various locations (a restaurant, gym, outdoors and on a construction site) where each scenario has a range of self-contained learning units lasting from 20 to 45 minutes. The learning is broken down into discrete learning objectives, each of which can be completed within 30 minutes. The entire course was developed as SCORM conformant packages, and the content is authored using QTI based XML.
"The Street" was built according to IMS Guidelines for Creating Accessible Learning Technologies. The software is designed to be directly accessible, so that a person with a disability can operate all of the built-in access features of the product without relying on the aid of an assistive technology. It includes full text rendering of all voice overs and a built in speech synthesis module to read the content to the visually impaired.
Key Features:
- Originally a browser based product this was subsequently re-issued as an application on CDROM
- The course was provided as twenty one hour units, and as a single twenty hour learning object with additional interactive features
- All units were delivered as SCORM packages, with scores, bookmarks and additional data being saved to the Learning Management System
